The Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott have made progress on a long-term contract extension, a source told Clarence Hill of DLLS.

There's an effort to get a deal signed before the club's season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Hill adds.

Prescott, 31, is set to enter the final year of a four-year, $160-million contract he signed with the club in March 2021. His $55.1-million cap hit in 2024 would be the largest in NFL history, taking up 21.6% of Dallas' cap space, per Spotrac.

His deal also includes a no-trade and no-tag clause, setting up the signal-caller to hit free agency in 2025 if no extension is agreed upon.

"I think it says a lot if it is or isn't," Prescott said last week when asked if he needs a contract signed before the campaign begins, per Joseph Hoyt of DLLS.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones has stated publicly that he wants to keep Prescott long term. However, Prescott told reporters in late August that he stopped listening to what Jones says to the media "a long time ago."

The Mississippi State product is coming off arguably his best season as a pro, setting career highs in completions and touchdowns en route to being the MVP runner-up.
