Fields: Steelers gave Wilson 'petty' game ball for Broncos win
Russell Wilson didn't get a chance to take revenge against his former team on the field, but the Pittsburgh Steelers still handed him a "petty game ball" after their 13-6 road win against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Steelers quarterback Justin Fields revealed the tribute to Wilson and mentioned that he was happy to beat the veteran's previous club.
"I think we all know Russ got kind of did dirty last year," Fields told reporters. "I know he wished he could have played today in this game, but it's awesome getting a win for him. He got a petty game ball."
Wilson was unable to play Sunday due to a calf injury that's sidelined him for the first two games of the season. The Steelers picked up the 35-year-old quarterback in March once the Broncos cut him after two seasons. He signed a five-year, $242.6-million extension with Denver in 2022.
Punter Corliss Waitman and receiver Brandon Johnson also received petty game balls, Fields said. Both players were previously on the Broncos as well.
Sunday's victory gave the Steelers their first 2-0 start since 2020. However, the offense has struggled to get in sync, scoring one touchdown through two games.
