Dolphins place Tua on IR

The Miami Dolphins placed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve, the team announced Tuesday.

Tagovailoa sustained a concussion during last week's loss to the Buffalo Bills. He'll miss at least four games.

The Dolphins are placing Tagovailoa on IR to give the signal-caller extended time to pass the NFL's concussion protocol and meet with outside neurologists, Rapoport adds.

Miami has a bye in Week 6, so the earliest Tagovailoa can return to the lineup is Oct. 27 against the Arizona Cardinals. Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson is in line to start Sunday versus the Seattle Seahawks. Miami also announced the signing of signal-caller Tyler Huntley off the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad.

The 26-year-old Tagovailoa suffered the concussion on Thursday Night Football after colliding with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. Tagovailoa was ruled out almost immediately after the play.

Tagovailoa has been diagnosed with four concussions dating back to his final season with Alabama in 2019, where he sustained one while also breaking his hip and nose. In 2022, Tagovailoa missed four NFL regular-season games and the wild-card round due to multiple concussions.

The Hawaii native reportedly has no plans to retire and is focused on returning to the field. He had a great 2023 season, leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards en route to an 11-6 record.
