Canales: Panthers not considering trading Young despite benching

Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn't looking to trade quarterback Bryce Young.

"That's not something we're really considering," Canales told reporters Wednesday, including The Athletic's Joe Person. "We have a great situation with our quarterbacks right now, with guys that have experience. We love where we're at."

The Panthers demoted Young to the team's backup role earlier this week. Veteran Andy Dalton will start in place of the 2023 No. 1 pick. Carolina also has rookie Jack Plummer on its practice squad.

Young has struggled since entering the NFL, completing 59.3% of his pass attempts for 3,122 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in 18 games. The 23-year-old has also been sacked 68 times.

Still, Canales said he believes Young can be a franchise quarterback despite his early woes.

"This is a developmentally-minded program. The development didn't stop," Canales said, per ESPN's David Newton. "Every rep he's out there, we're evaluating the whole thing, having conversations, and just continuing to push all of our guys, including Bryce, to take that next step."

Canales added that Young had a "fantastic" day with the scout team.
