New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo might not be planning to make an immediate change under center after all.

"Jacoby (Brissett) is our quarterback until I say he's not the quarterback," Mayo said Friday, a day after the team's 24-3 loss to the New York Jets, according to Taylor Kyles of CLNS Media.

The statement comes after Mayo said Thursday night he was unsure if rookie Drake Maye would be the Patriots' Week 4 starter. Maye, this year's third overall pick, entered the matchup against the Jets late and attempted eight passes, completing four for 22 yards in his first NFL regular-season outing. Brissett, meanwhile, logged just 98 passing yards and completed 12 of 18 attempts before leaving the game.

"Last night he showed a lot of toughness, a lot of grit," Mayo said of Brissett, according to New England Sports Fellow. " ... As a team, as a coaching staff, we just got to be better."

Brissett did help New England upset the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1, but he's only thrown for one touchdown in three games this season. The 31-year-old has also been sacked an NFL-high nine times, including five against New York. The Week 3 defeat dropped the Patriots to 1-2 in 2024.

Mayo also recently confirmed that the Patriots have been giving Maye increased first-team reps at practice, saying that the first-year QB is getting 30% of the snaps with the starters.

New England visits the San Francisco 49ers in Week 4.
