Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert didn't return to Sunday's 20-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers after aggravating an ankle injury.

Herbert was noticeably hobbled after taking a sack on a first-down play in the third quarter. He stayed on the field for a second-down handoff before limping off to the sideline. He was ruled questionable to return.

Head coach John Harbaugh said postgame that he didn't have an injury update, according to Bolt Beat's Alex Insdorf. The star QB left the stadium in a walking boot.

Taylor Heinicke replaced Herbert but was unable to muster much. Heinicke completed both of his two pass attempts but was sacked three times.

Herbert was a game-time decision for Sunday's game due to a high ankle sprain. He described the pain as "not great" Friday before the contest.

Harbaugh added that he didn't hesitate to take Herbert out of the game.

"As soon as I saw him get up - the first sign of any limp - he was coming out," Harbaugh said, according to Lindsey Thiry of ESPN.

The 26-year-old passer left the game with 12 completions on 18 attempts, 125 yards, and one touchdown.

Offensive tackle Rashawn Slater also exited with a pectoral injury.
