49ers' Shanahan: Chiefs game 'has nothing to do' with Super Bowl losses
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't want past Super Bowl defeats to weigh on his team ahead of Sunday's contest against the Kansas City Chiefs.
"I think everyone understands that we've lost two Super Bowls to them, so I mean, that can give you a little post-traumatic stress when you turn on the tape," Shanahan said Wednesday, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.
"But I think that's human nature. You've got to make sure you don't get caught up in that. This game has nothing to do with past games. That was last year."
San Francisco's dreams of lifting a Lombardi Trophy were dashed in February when the Chiefs won Super Bowl LVIII in overtime 25-22. Shanahan also watched Kansas City celebrate a championship in front of him when his side lost in Super Bowl LIV.
The 49ers held leads late in the fourth quarter and overtime in their recent Super Bowl loss. They also saw a 10-point lead evaporate in Super Bowl LIV.
Linebacker Fred Warner shared his coach's sentiment.
"I mean, probably not as dramatic as I'm sure everybody else is probably thinking," Warner said. "It's 'Hey, it was what it was.' Moved on. New season, new game, new teams, new players. We're just trying to play up to the best of our ability."
The 5-0 Chiefs come into the rematch as one of two undefeated teams in the NFL, while the 49ers enter an even .500 at 3-3.
