Cowboys' Martin to have season-ending ankle surgery
Dallas Cowboys guard Zack Martin will undergo season-ending ankle surgery, head coach Mike McCarthy announced Thursday.
Martin missed the team's last two games due to ankle and shoulder injuries. He started Dallas' first 10 games this season and has made 162 starts for the franchise since being drafted in the first round in 2014.
The 34-year-old said in June that retiring after the 2024 campaign was a possibility. The Notre Dame product is under contract through the 2025 season. McCarthy noted Thursday that he hasn't talked to Martin about potentially retiring.
"I think you just have to take a step back and deal with one thing at a time, and that's frankly the conversation that Zack and I had," McCarthy said, according to Ed Werder of WFAA. "The focus is really about the surgery, what's next."
Martin is one of the greatest interior linemen in NFL history, having earned nine Pro Bowl berths and seven first-team All-Pro nods. He was also named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team.
Injuries have plagued the Cowboys this year. Quarterback Dak Prescott is already out for the season with a hamstring injury.
Dallas is the NFC's 12-seed with a 5-7 record.
