Dickerson: I don't think Saquon will break my record

Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson isn't betting on Saquon Barkley smashing his record for most rushing yards in a season.

"I don't think he'll break it," Dickerson said about the Philadelphia Eagles star, according to Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. "But if he breaks it, he breaks it. Do I want him to break it? Absolutely not. I don't pull no punches on that. But I'm not whining about it."

Dickerson rushed for 2,105 yards in 1984. Barkley is within striking distance, needing 268 yards over his final two games to break the Hall of Famer's mark.

Dickerson set the record in a 16-game season but says he has no issue if it takes Barkley 17 contests to pass him.

"He had 17 games to do it? Hey, football is football," he explained. "That's the way I look at it. If he's fortunate to get over 2,000 yards and get the record, it's a great record to have."

Dickerson added: "O.J. Simpson was my favorite player. He went over 2,000 yards in 14 games. It took me 15 games to get to 2,000. I had one extra game to play. Getting to 2,000 is an accomplishment in itself."

Barkley is averaging 122.5 rushing yards per game this season. That would put him on pace to finish with 2,083 yards, just 22 short of matching Dickerson's record.

The Eagles running back has totaled 1,838 rushing yards in 2024.
