Patriots' Mayo focused on winning season finale, not No. 1 pick
The New England Patriots are one loss away from securing the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but head coach Jerod Mayo isn't giving it much thought.
Mayo said Monday that the team is "100% focused on beating the Buffalo Bills" on Sunday, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.
The Patriots own the first overall selection because the New York Giants moved down the draft order after beating the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
New England has won only three games in Mayo's first year - the franchise's fewest since the 1992 campaign. The Patriots selected Drew Bledsoe with the No. 1 pick the following offseason.
Mayo also left open the possibility that rookie quarterback Drake Maye could be limited in the season finale.
"I would say right now, everything is in consideration, and we'll see how the week goes," Mayo said on WEEI, per Reiss. "It's trying to be present and win this football game, but we have to look out the front windshield and where we want to go."
Despite the poor campaign and questions about his job security, the first-year head coach added that he still feels like he's on the "same page" as ownership, according to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
