Report: Commanders' Jonathan Allen gets permission to seek trade
The Washington Commanders have granted defensive tackle Jonathan Allen permission to seek a trade this offseason, sources told CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones.
Multiple teams have called about Allen recently, and those calls are expected to continue this week during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Jones reports.
Washington plans to do right by Allen and is involved in helping him find a new team either via trade or free agency, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Alabama product is entering the final year of the four-year, $72-million extension he signed in 2021. He'll earn a base salary of $15.5 million for the 2025 campaign, per Over the Cap.
Allen, 30, has spent eight seasons in Washington after being selected by the Commanders 17th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He earned back-to-back Pro Bowl nods in 2021 and 2022 after recording nine and 7.5 sacks, respectively.
Allen sustained a torn pectoral muscle last October in a game against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite being projected to miss the rest of the season, Allen returned to the field for the final two weeks of the campaign. He posted 19 tackles, three tackles for loss, and three sacks in eight contests over the 2024 season.
Washington fortified the middle of its defensive line over the past two years, signing Daron Payne to a four-year, $90-million extension in 2023 and selecting Jer'Zhan Newton in the second round of the 2024 draft.
