Bills GM defends draft decisions: 'Our job is not fantasy football'
Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane isn't impressed with the criticism of his decisions from the 2025 NFL Draft.
In an interview Monday on WGR 550's "The Jeremy and Joe Show," Beane responded to the host's prior complaints that the Bills mainly drafted defensive players.
"You guys were bitchin' in 2018 about Josh Allen, you guys wanted Josh Rosen. And now you guys are bitchin' we don't have a receiver," Beane said. "We just scored 30 points in a row for eight straight games. ... Our job is to score points and win games. Where do we need to get better? Defense."
The Bills used their first five selections on defensive players. They then selected one wide receiver with their remaining four picks - Kaden Prather in the seventh round.
"Our job is not fantasy football, to trot out the best receivers," Beane said. "Our job is to score points. It doesn't matter what receivers or what quarterback. If you score points at the level we scored, that is winning football."
The Bills allowed 30 points or more in four games during the 2024 campaign, including the 32-29 AFC championship loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. They didn't retain a large number of defensive players in the offseason, including safety Micah Hyde, who retired, and Von Miller, who was released.
Buffalo was one of the strongest teams offensively in the 2024 regular season, ranking second in average points per game and 10th in average yards per game. Allen also won the league's MVP award after throwing for 3,731 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 12. He was the first passer in NFL history to log more than 25 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns with less than 10 interceptions thrown.
