Kyle Shanahan 'looking forward' to being out of his father's shadow
The Cleveland Browns officially introduced Kyle Shanahan as their new offensive coordinator at a press conference on Thursday. Shanahan comes to Cleveland after four seasons with the Washington Redskins where he served the same position under his father, head coach Mike Shanahan.
Shanahan spoke about his time with the Redskins and was asked how he envisioned getting out of his father's shadow, via the Washington Post.
"I'm looking forward to it. I think it's gonna be nice when I hear the head coach's last name and 'S' isn't always tagged to the end of it -- the Shanahans. So I'm looking forward to that part. But I've worked a lot of years in the NFL. I started out my career away from my dad. That was always a goal of mine, to prove myself before I ever coached with my dad... I thought that I HAD proved myself. And it was something I always wanted to do in my life -- I wanted to coach with my dad at one time. I enjoyed it. We went through some ups and downs, but it's something I wouldn't take back for anything. Excited to move on and be done with that part of my life, but I think it made me better, and it's something I'm glad that I did."
Shanahan has served on the Tampa Bay Buccanners coaching staff and became the youngest offensive coordinator in history when he was hired by the Houston Texans in 2008.
He's best known though for his time in Washington with his father, and after winning the NFC East in 2012, the Redskins had a disastrous 2013 season finishing the year 3-13. Both father and son were fired the day after Washington's final game of the season.
