Mavericks owner Mark Cuban: 'I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion'

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has never been one to keep his opinion to himself. The outspoken billionaire turned his attention to the NFL on Sunday and predicted the league would hit a tipping point with it's continued saturation of the television market.

"I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion," Cuban said to reporters, via ESPN. "I'm just telling you, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they're getting hoggy. Just watch. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way.

"I'm just telling you, when you've got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That's rule number one of business."

Cuban's comments relate directly to the NFL's expanded television coverage. Thursday night games will now be aired on CBS and simulcast on the NFL Network and there's even been talk of playing on other days as well. Cuban believes that despite the NFL's standing as a ratings juggernaut, games on more days will only be a detriment.

"They're starting to take over every night of TV," Cuban said. "Initially, it'll be, 'Yeah, they're the biggest-rating thing there is.' Ok, Thursday, that's great, regardless of whether it impacts [the NBA] during that period when we cross over. Then if it gets Saturday, now you're impacting college. Now it's on four days a week...

"It's all football. At some point people get sick of it."

While the NFL has playoff games on Saturday, doing so during the regular season and cutting into college seems unlikely. Giving college its own day allows the NCAA to build ready made stars for the pros, something the NFL has used to great advantage.

Cuban's business skills can't be denied, but it's hard not to look at these as comments from a competitor who appears jealous of the NFL's success.
