The Houston Texans selected Tom Savage in the fourth round to give them another arm on their roster.
Savage would figure to have a chance to earn the starting role during training camp, as he would only have to beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick and Case Keenum to get there.
He had a strong season at Pittsburgh in 2013, throwing for 21 touchdowns compared to just nine interceptions, but he didn't play in 2011 or 2012 because of a pair of transfers. Thrusting Savage into a starting role right away could be setting him up to fail.
Still, Savage is a prototypical pocket passer that throws the deep ball well. Once he learns the offense Savage should have success if the Texans offensive line can keep him protected. He's anything but a scrambler, so Savage will need time in the pocket to stand and deliver the football.
This pick has a lot of upside for the Houston and Savage has franchise quarterback potential.
