Jets' rookie Tajh Boyd on Geno Smith: 'It's his team'

The New York Jets may or may not be in the midst of a quarterback competition. According to some, like head coach Rex Ryan, it's a true competition between free agent acquisition Michael Vick and the incumbent Geno Smith.

However, in Vick's mind the job already belongs to Smith and another Jets quarterback shares that opinion.

Rookie Tajh Boyd appeared on "Around The League" on the NFL Network Friday and was asked flat out if it is Smith's job. His answer was simple: "Yes, sir."

Though the team has really only just begun offseason activities, Boyd has already witnessed the offense flowing through Smith.

"Geno has been pretty much... he's been the offense," Boyd said. "You know, right now, it's his team. But, I mean, at the end of the day, you want to go out there and do everything that's possible to win.

"If Geno gives us the best chance to win, he's going to start. If Mike gives us the best chance to win, he'll start."

It certainly seems like - barring injury - Smith will be the starter come opening day. Still, in Ryan's mind competition tends to bring out the best in players, so it doesn't hurt to at least make his quarterbacks believe the job is up for grabs.
