49ers' Justin Smith not yet medically cleared, expected to be ready for training camp

It's been a quiet offseason for Justin Smith of the San Francisco 49ers, as the defensive end has yet to take part in any of the team's offseason activities. That's not about to change either, though he is expected to be ready in time for next month's training camp.

"He hasn't been cleared to practice just yet," head coach Jim Harbaugh said, via Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. "He will be [cleared] for training camp."

No specific injury was given as the reason that Smith hasn't been cleared, but according to Maiocco, Harbaugh intimated that Smith underwent surgery during the offseason.

Smith spent the vast majority of last season listed on the 49ers' injury report with a shoulder problem and that is likely the area addressed by the surgery. His snap count took a dive toward the end of the 2013 season and until Smith's proven 100 percent, the 49ers have no problem holding the veteran out of practice.
