Brees suffers strained oblique, considered day-to-day

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees missed Saturday's scrimmage after straining his left oblique during practice Friday, coach Sean Payton told reporters.

The team considers the injury "minor" and will monitor his status for the next few days, Payton said. He's considered day-to-day.

Brees' injury opens the door for quarterbacks Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin to get more prominent looks during training camp as they compete to backup the eight-time Pro Bowler. Payton has yet to tip his hand on who currently maintains the edge to claim the role.

The 35-year-old Brees has been remarkably durable over his 13-year career, having missed just one game in eight seasons with the Saints.

Brees enters the season fresh off his third-straight year exceeding 5,000 passing yards, while throwing his fewest interceptions (12) since 2009.
