Lions' Williams: 'I don't plan on' breakout game being best of career

Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was happy to have a breakout game against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1, but he expects it to be just the beginning.

"Me personally, I expect to have a big game," Williams said after the team's 26-20 overtime win on Sunday Night Football. "I guess it's just big to the world just because it's my first one, but I plan to have a lot more. I don't plan on this being my best game of my career."

Williams exploded for 121 yards and a touchdown on five receptions against the Rams. It was the first 100-yard game of the Alabama product's career.

The 23-year-old has struggled with injuries and hasn't consistently been involved in the Lions' passing attack since the club selected him 12th overall in the 2022 draft. However, he's happy with his improvements during his time in Detroit and expects to continue producing.

"It means a lot," Williams said. "I put in a lot of work. Not just this year. It's been continuous work ever since I got in the league."

He added: "This is just the start, though. We got 16 more (games) in the regular season, (plus) playoffs. We got a lot more ball to play."

Williams and the Lions continue their 2024 campaign with a home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. The speedster might still be walking around with his game ball from the season opener in the lead-up to the matchup.

"I never got a game ball, not at Bama, not at nowhere," Williams joked. "I ain't even going to lie, this right here this might not leave my hands. I might sleep (holding the ball)."
