Seahawks begin contract negotiations with Russell Wilson
With just one year remaining on his rookie contract, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is in line to receive a sizable, long-term extension at some point this offseason.
As general manager John Schneider said Tuesday on 710 ESPN Seattle, the two sides have already begun negotiating towards a new deal.
"We are going to do what's best for the organization," Schneider said. "That's the No. 1 thing. I think Russell Wilson wants to win championships. Russell knows there are certain dominoes that have to fall in place. He knows it. He gets it. He wants to win for a long time."
After three highly successful seasons as the starting quarterback, helping the Seahawks to consecutive Super Bowl appearances, multiple reports have indicated that Wilson could become the league's highest-paid quarterback.
Though Schneider wouldn't indicate whether or not the team will go that far, as the recent trend of quarterback contracts would suggest, the Seahawks appear to have a plan in place.
"I've talked to his agent (Mark Rodgers)," Schneider said. "I'm not going to get into specifics of contract negotiations other than to say that we're going to do what's best for this organization, and that doesn't mean you do exactly what everybody else has done around the league. I think we've proven we do things in the manner we want to attack it."
While Wilson's statistical production doesn't yet match that of some other top quarterbacks around the league, his overall presence and big-play ability have played key roles in the Seahawks becoming a perennial Super Bowl contender.
Regardless of the contract terms, ensuring that Wilson remains in a Seahawks uniform for the foreseeable future is by far the team's most important offseason task.
