A already stacked 2015 free-agent market just got that much more talented.
The New England Patriots have opted against picking up Darrelle Revis' $20-million contract option, allowing him hit the open market when the new league year begins Tuesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Declining Revis' option doesn't guarantee that he won't return to Patriots, as the team will still have an opportunity to negotiate a new long-term deal, but other teams around the league can now get involved.
Of course, that includes Revis' former team, and one who was said to be interested in orchestrating a reunion, the New York Jets.
The eight-year veteran's elite shutdown ability was instrumental in the Patriots' Super Bowl run this past season, and while it would be no surprise to see upper management reward him accordingly, anything can happen when a player of his caliber becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Whether it's the Patriots, the Jets or one of the several salary cap-rich teams that have missed out on their marquee free-agent targets thus far, Revis is now in line to receive another substantial pay day.
