Report: Patriots hosting Brandon Spikes for free-agent visit

Steve Mitchell / USA TODAY Sports

In the market for some added depth at the linebacker position, the New England Patriots are meeting with veteran free agent Brandon Spikes on Wednesday, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Spikes played the first four years of his NFL career in New England before moving on to join the division-rival Buffalo Bills as a free agent last offseason.

While the Patriots boast one of the league's most impressive linebacker groups across the board, Bill Belichick and his defensive staff would certainly be able to find an early-down role for an interior run defender as productive as Spikes has long proven to be.

Spikes started 10 of 16 games for the Bills in 2014, recording 54 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble.
