Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback C.J. Wilson suffered a severe hand injury in a fireworks accident over the Fourth of July weekend, according to Roy Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

Wilson's father said his son lost his index and middle fingers on one hand, as reported by Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. The 25-year-old was undergoing a second surgery in an attempt to repair the hand.

According to Ryan Herman of the Lincoln Times-News, Wilson was visiting his parents for the long weekend in Lincolnton, N.C., and was with family members and friends when he suffered the gruesome injury.

The Buccaneers released a statement expressing concern for Wilson's long-term health, but didn't provide any further details on his condition:

We are aware that C.J. Wilson was involved in an accident that occurred over July 4th holiday. It is our understanding that the injury occurred to one of his hands and our primary concern at this moment is for his long-term health. We have been in contact with C.J. and are continuing to monitor the situation.

After spending the first season of his career with the Chicago Bears, Wilson joined the Buccaneers in 2014 and was on the active roster for their final two regular-season games.

He's the second NFL player to come away from the holiday weekend with a fireworks-related hand injury, as New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul remains in hospital after a similar accident.
