Former Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora announces retirement
Longtime New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora officially announced his retirement Wednesday, calling it a career after 12 highly productive seasons in the NFL.
Umenyiora played the first 10 years for the Giants after joining the club as a second-round draft selection in 2003, appearing in 129 games and recording 75 sacks over that span.
"Osi was certainly one of the premier defensive ends in the game and a key part of our two Super Bowl teams," team president and CEO John Mara said in the team's release. "But he was much more than that. Osi had so much pride and always gave 100 percent. He represented himself and our team on and off the field like a true professional and was a great example to his teammates."
His 75 sacks in a Giants uniform put him fourth among the franchise's all-time great pass-rushers, behind only Michael Strahan, Lawrence Taylor, and Leonard Marshall.
Umenyiora moved on to spend two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons from 2013-14, where he appeared in all 32 regular-season games and added another 10 sacks to finish his pro career with an impressive total of 85.
