Fantasy: 5 moves you need to make in Week 2
Every Monday, theScore offers a weekly fantasy hockey column detailing a handful of moves you should make. This week's edition focuses on Week 2. Ownership percentages (as of Sunday, Oct. 13) and position eligibility are courtesy of Yahoo.
Add Ondrej Kase
Team: Ducks
Position: RW
Ownership: 14%
The Ducks are one of many teams with four games this week, but they don't play on any of the busy nights (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday), so you'll be able to get Kase into your lineup for all of his games.
Kase is playing on the Ducks' first line with Ryan Getzlaf and has already amassed four points in five games. He scored at a 30-goal pace during an injury-riddled 2018-19 campaign. With a clean bill of health, he could reach the mark this season.
Buy low on Sebastian Aho
Team: Hurricanes
Position: C
Ownership: 97%
Aho has one goal and zero assists through six contests. An impatient owner could be growing frustrated with his lack of production and may be willing to move him for a package below market value.
If you can pry Aho away from his owner, it could wind up as a league-winning move. The Hurricanes superstar is third in the NHL in individual expected goals entering Sunday and is bound to bust out of his slump in no time.
Add James Reimer
Team: G
Position: Hurricanes
Ownership: 13%
Reimer has vastly outplayed teammate Petr Mrazek in the early going:
Stat | Reimer | Mrazek |
---|---|---|
GP | 3 | 3 |
SV% | .933 | .882 |
GAA | 2.65 | 2.57 |
GSAA | 3.39 | -1.49 |
GSAA = Goals saved above average
Mrazek was the Hurricanes' undisputed No. 1 goalie entering the season, but he's been rather inconsistent in his career. Reimer has also had his ups and downs, but he's put together some stellar seasons behind some pretty awful Maple Leafs teams in the past.
Carolina is one of the better defensive teams in the league, and even if Reimer is able to carve out a 50-50 split with Mrazek, he's worth owning in fantasy.
Drop Ryan McDonagh
Team: Lightning
Position: D
Ownership: 50%
Early in the season, you'd much rather own players with a high ceiling and a low floor rather than the opposite. McDonagh has an extremely low ceiling but a pretty steady floor. He's on neither of the Lightning's power-play units, and since he forms Tampa's shutdown pairing with Erik Cernak, he starts more shifts in the defensive zone than the offensive zone.
You're better off dropping McDonagh, who's been held without a point for the first six games, in exchange for someone with a higher upside.
Add Neal Pionk
Team: Jets
Position: D
Ownership: 23%
Pionk has been the beneficiary of the Jets' depleted blue line. He's averaging 23:10 per game and has registered five points through seven contests, and with a lethal offensive attack in front of him, it could continue. He excels at racking up secondary stats too, such as hits and blocked shots.
