Dallas Stars forward Corey Perry has been suspended five games for elbowing Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis during the Winter Classic on New Year's Day, the NHL's Department of Player Safety announced Friday.

Ellis was placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, though the length of his absence is not yet known. With 28 points in 39 games, the 29-year-old had been on pace to shatter his career high of 41 points set last season.

Perry was ejected for the hit. He will be forced to miss what would've been his return to Anaheim on Jan. 9, but the Stars will make another trip to the Honda Center in April. The 34-year-old spent 14 seasons with the Ducks, winning a Stanley Cup and a Hart Trophy, before joining the Stars as a free agent this summer.

Perry, who had two prior suspensions in his career, has 13 points in 34 contests this season.
