Islanders fans litter ice with empty cans in potential last game at Coliseum

If that was it for the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, then it was one heck of a ride.

New York Islanders fans celebrated Wednesday's overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of their semifinal series - and the potential last game at the Coliseum - by throwing empty beer cans onto the ice.

Anthony Beauvillier, who scored the OT winner, offered a unique perspective on the aromas that best describe the old barn.

Nassau Coliseum served as the Islanders' home arena from the franchise's inception in 1972 to the team's temporary relocation to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in 2015. The club split home games between the two rinks from 2018-20 and spent this season entirely at the Coliseum.

The Islanders are set to move into UBS Arena - a new, $1.5-billion multipurpose arena next to Belmont Park - beginning next season.
