World Cup of Hockey pushed back to at least 2025
The NHL and the NHL Players' Association announced they've canceled plans for a World Cup of Hockey in February 2024. Instead, the two sides will aim to hold the tournament in February 2025.
"Unfortunately, in the current environment it is not feasible to hold the World Cup of Hockey (in February 2024)," the statement reads. "We continue to plan for the next World Cup of Hockey, hopefully in February 2025."
There hasn't been an international best-on-best hockey tournament since the 2016 World Cup.
The NHL hasn't participated in the Winter Olympics since 2014. The league aimed to attend in 2022, but COVID-19 threw a wrench in those plans.
There have been three previous editions of the World Cup. The United States was victorious in the inaugural tournament in 1996 before Canada won in 2004 and 2016.
