The Los Angeles Kings re-signed top goalie prospect Erik Portillo to a three-year contract carrying an average annual value of $783,333, the team announced Sunday.

He'll be a restricted free agent upon the completion of the contract. He can't become unrestricted until 2028.

The Kings acquired Portillo from the Buffalo Sabres in 2023 for a third-round pick. Buffalo had drafted him in the third round in 2019.

Portillo, who's listed at 6-foot-6 and 224 pounds, enjoyed a standout NCAA career at the University of Michigan before turning pro in 2023. He shined in his first professional season, posting a .918 save percentage in 39 games with the AHL's Ontario Reign last year.

The 23-year-old projects to begin the 2024-25 campaign in the AHL, but he could push his way into the NHL if the veteran tandem of Darcy Kuemper and David Rittich underperform.
