Report: Kane set to undergo sports hernia surgery
Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane is scheduled to undergo sports hernia surgery in the next 10 days or so, sources told Sportsnet's Mark Spector.
Kane played through the injury last season, Spector added.
It still remains unclear exactly how long Kane will be out, but Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported in August that it could be long term.
"He's going to be out months," Friedman said on his podcast on Aug. 14. "I'm not talking one or two months, I think it's going to be longer than that."
Kane recorded 24 goals and 20 assists in 77 games during the regular season. He added eight points while suiting up in 20 of Edmonton's 25 postseason contests.
The 33-year-old has two years remaining on his contract with a $5.125-million cap hit. If Kane gets placed on long-term injured reserve, his contract wouldn't count against the cap while he remains sidelined. The Oilers currently have $945,833 in cap space with a 22-player roster, including Kane.
Edmonton has ample depth on the wings to make up for Kane's potential absence after adding Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson in the offseason.
