Engvall, Holl among players waived before Monday roster deadline
New York Islanders forward Pierre Engvall and Detroit Red Wings defenseman Justin Holl were among the notable players placed on waivers Sunday.
Season-opening NHL rosters have to be set by Monday at 5 p.m. ET. Players who required waivers to be assigned to the AHL had to be on waivers by 2 p.m. on Sunday in order to be sent down before Monday's deadline.
Engvall, 28, has six seasons left on a seven-year, $21-million contract signed last summer. He notched 10 goals and 28 points in 74 games last season.
Maxim Tsyplakov beat Engvall for a top-six role. The Islanders didn't think Engvall would be effective on their fourth line, general manager Lou Lamoriello said, according to Newsday's Andrew Gross.
Holl, 32, recorded only five assists in 38 contests last season. He has two years left at a $3.4-million cap hit.
One of the top young players on waivers is Calgary Flames forward Jakob Pelletier. The 23-year-old was drafted 26th overall in 2019. He has 10 points in 37 contests in his NHL career. Pelletier has 48 goals and 11 points in 119 AHL games over three seasons.
