Kaliyev: 'Dream come true' to play for Rangers
Arthur Kaliyev is home.
The newest New York Ranger - who was born in Uzbekistan but grew up on Staten Island - is thrilled at the chance to play for his favorite team growing up.
"I didn't expect it, obviously, but it's kind of like a dream come true," Kaliyev told reporters Tuesday. "I grew up watching and obviously living down here for a long time."
The Rangers claimed Kaliyev off waivers from the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.
"I used to always come watch games here (at Madison Square Garden)," he said. "It's crazy. Not much more words you can say."
Kaliyev was once a top prospect for the Kings but struggled to carve out a prominent role with the organization after being drafted 33rd overall in 2019. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound winger produced 71 points in 188 career games with L.A. His best season came in 2022-23 when he tallied 13 goals and 15 assists in 56 appearances.
Still just 23 years old and known for possessing a heavy shot, Kaliyev said he's excited to wipe the slate clean and start over.
"Been looking for it for quite a bit of time," he said. "This is going to be really exciting, get a new, fresh starting opportunity to prove yourself as a player. I'm really excited for this opportunity."
