Report: Capitals, Thompson had contract talks
The Washington Capitals have had contract talks with goaltender Logan Thompson, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported on Thursday's edition of "Early Trading."
The Capitals would like to sign Thompson before the 4 Nations Face-Off if negotiations progress well, LeBrun added. The tournament begins Feb. 12 in Montreal.
Thompson has been superb in his first season with Washington. He has a .925 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average in 27 games to go with a remarkable 22-2-3 record. He ranks third league-wide in wins, save percentage, and goals-against average among qualified netminders.
The 27-year-old is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. Thompson's cap hit of $766,667 is the lowest in the NHL this season.
The Capitals acquired Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights in June for two third-round picks.
Thompson signed with the Golden Knights as an undrafted free agent in 2020 after playing for the Capitals' ECHL affiliate. The Brock University alum is 78-34-14 in his 130 games with Vegas and Washington, and he has a .915 career save percentage.
Washington's reportedly also had talks with goaltender Charlie Lindgren, who is also an unrestricted free agent at season's end. The Capitals have been "treading carefully" out of concern they could affect the team's chemistry by signing one netminder first, LeBrun reports.
Lindgren backstopped the Capitals to the playoffs last season, posting a .911 save percentage and six shutouts in 50 games. He has a .900 save percentage in 21 contests this year.
The 31-year-old has played 131 NHL games over parts of nine seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, St. Louis Blues, and Capitals. He's gone 63-47-14 and has a .907 career save percentage.
Washington is first in the NHL with a 32-10-5 record and 69 points.
