Report: Canes worked on trades for Miller, Pettersson before Rantanen deal

One way or another, Carolina Hurricanes rookie general manager Eric Tulsky was determined to make a splash.

Before completing a three-way megadeal to acquire Mikko Rantanen on Friday, the Hurricanes were working on making one of two trades with the Vancouver Canucks: one involving J.T. Miller, and another involving Elias Pettersson, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The Canucks have reportedly been exploring the trade market for both Miller and Pettersson amid an apparent rift between the two star centers. Miller is viewed as the more likely of the two players to be on the move at some point.

Vancouver reportedly almost traded Miller to the New York Rangers for a deal involving Filip Chytil, but it ultimately fell apart. The New Jersey Devils have also reportedly been in talks with the Canucks for Miller.

This wasn't the first time the Hurricanes made a play for Pettersson, though. Carolina and Vancouver reportedly engaged in trade talks for the Swede last season before the Canucks signed Pettersson to an eight-year, $92.8-million extension in March.

Down seasons in 2024-25 from Miller and Pettersson - both former 100-point players - have contributed to a tumultuous season for the Canucks. They currently find themselves outside of the playoff picture after claiming the Pacific Division title a season ago.
