Stars land Rantanen, sign him to 8-year, $96M extension
The Dallas Stars acquired Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes and signed the star forward to an eight-year extension with a $12-million cap hit, the team confirmed Friday.
Carolina traded Rantanen to Dallas for forward Logan Stankoven, a conditional first-round pick in both 2026 and 2028, and a third-round pick in 2026 and 2027. Both first-rounders are top-10 protected.
The Hurricanes traded Martin Necas and Jack Drury, plus second- and fourth-round picks, to the Colorado Avalanche for Rantanen on Jan. 24.
Rantanen tallied only two goals and six points in 13 games in his brief stint with the Hurricanes. The 28-year-old scored 25 goals and 64 points in 49 contests this season with the Avalanche before being dealt to Carolina.
The Finn recorded a career-high 55 goals and 105 points in 2022-23 and posted 100-plus points in the previous two campaigns.
Rantanen has a cap hit of $4.625 million, as the Chicago Blackhawks retained half his salary in the trade that sent him to the Hurricanes.
The Stars have $5.5 million of cap space, according to PuckPedia.
