Hutson becomes fastest D-man in Canadiens history to 50 points
Phenom Lane Hutson placed himself in Montreal Canadiens lore Monday, becoming the fastest defenseman in club history to 50 career points.
Hutson accomplished the feat on Juraj Slafkovsky's power-play goal in the first period against the Buffalo Sabres while skating in his 63rd career game. Montreal went on to win 4-3 in overtime to claim its fifth straight victory.
Hall of Famer Chris Chelios previously held the franchise record, reaching 50 points in 66 career games.
Hutson notched two points in a pair of contests last season and is now up to 48 in 61 appearances in 2024-25.
Only 10 defensemen in NHL history reached 50 career points faster than Hutson.
Player | Games to 50 points |
---|---|
Mark Howe | 46 |
Harry Cameron | 47 |

Cale Makar | 57 |
Stefan Persson | 58 |
Nicklas Lidstrom | 59 |
Sprague Cleghorn | 59 |

Makar, Persson, and Beck are the only players on the list whom the Hockey Hall of Fame hasn't enshrined.
The Canadiens drafted the 5-foot-9, 162-pound Hutson in the second round in 2022. He's in contention for the Calder Trophy as the NHL's rookie of the year, along with San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini and Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf.
