Hellebuyck: I'll be better in Game 5
Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck likes the position his team is in, but he knows his performance needs to improve after he was pulled in back-to-back games.
"You don't love giving up that many goals, but we're 2-2 in the series," Hellebuyck said Monday. "That's all that matters, winning the next one. Am I going to be better? I am going to be better.
"I've studied goaltending extremely hard. I've probably studied the most out of anyone in this world. So, I know what to do and how to get my best game. That's what I'm looking forward to do. I get two days here. Time to bring it in Game 5."
Hellebuyck allowed 11 goals on 43 shots in the past two games as the St. Louis Blues evened their first-round series against the Presidents' Trophy-winning Jets.
The Vezina Trophy favorite posted a .925 save percentage and a 2.00 goals-against average in 63 games during the regular season.
"You don't win 47 games and then come in the playoffs and switch everything up," Hellebuyck said. "I know how it needs to look. I like a lot of things. I'm not gonna go make huge changes. That being said, I'm gonna be better. That's my job. ... I can't be giving up this many goals. We're a team in here. We're not pointing fingers at anyone. We're gonna do this together. I keep saying it, we're in a good spot."
Hellebuyck won the Vezina last year but faltered in the playoffs, allowing 24 goals in Winnipeg's five-game first-round exit versus the Colorado Avalanche.
The Jets won the opening two games of the series on home ice at Canada Life Centre and return to Winnipeg for Wednesday's Game 5.
"It's a best of three. I like our odds," Hellebuyck said. "We've got home-ice advantage, so that's where our mindset is."
