The Colorado Avalanche signed forward Brock Nelson to a three-year contract extension, the team announced Wednesday.
The new deal carries a $7.5-million cap hit, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports.
Nelson has a full no-trade clause in the first two years of the contract and a 15-team no-trade clause in the third year, according to PuckPedia.
The 33-year-old notched six goals and 13 points in 19 games with the Avalanche after being acquired from the New York Islanders before the trade deadline, and he added four assists in seven playoff games.
The Avalanche sent a 2026 first-round pick, top prospect Calum Ritchie, and defenseman Oliver Kylington to New York for Nelson and prospect William Dufour.
"(Nelson's) been a great center in this league for a long time, and he brings professionalism and a dedicated work ethic on and off the ice," Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said. "We think he will be a great fit and will be a stabilizing presence to our second-line center role with his size and ability to touch all areas of the ice."
Nelson tallied 26 goals and 56 points over the full campaign. It was the first time he didn't eclipse the 30-goal mark since the 2020-21 season.
The Minnesota native represented Team USA at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, where he failed to record a point in four games.
Nelson is coming off a six-year contract signed with the Islanders in 2019 that had a $6-million cap hit. A 2010 first-rounder, he racked up 295 goals and 574 points in 901 games with New York before being dealt to the Avalanche.
"Having spent my entire career with one organization, we weren't totally sure what to expect when we arrived in Denver," Nelson said. "But getting the opportunity to play for the Avalanche, to compete with a great group of teammates in that locker room, and in front of the tremendous fans at Ball Arena, we knew this was where we wanted to stay."
Colorado now has $1.2 million of projected cap space, according to PuckPedia. The Avalanche's notable remaining free agents include forward Jonathan Drouin and defenseman Ryan Lindgren. Colorado's lone restricted free agent on the NHL roster is defenseman Sam Malinski.
