Flames sign Backlund to 2-year, $6.5M extension
The Calgary Flames signed captain Mikael Backlund to a two-year contract extension with a $3.25-million annual cap hit, the team announced Wednesday.
Backlund tallied 15 goals and 32 points in 76 games last season. His new deal includes a full no-trade clause that becomes a 10-team no-trade clause on Jan. 1, 2028, according to PuckPedia.
The 36-year-old forward was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. He's coming off a two-year pact signed in September 2023 that had a $4.5-million annual cap hit.
Backlund has played his entire career with the Flames and has captained the team since 2023. Only Jarome Iginla has played more than Backlund's 1,066 career games with Calgary. He's accrued 215 goals and 563 points in 17 seasons.
Calgary drafted Backlund 24th overall in 2007.
