Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust was suspended three games for an illegal check to the head of Vancouver Canucks forward Brock Boeser, the league announced Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the final seconds of Pittsburgh's 3-2 win over Vancouver on Sunday.

The suspension is the first of Rust's 12-year NHL career. He ranks second on the Penguins in goals (18) and third in points (39) across 47 games this season.

Boeser was placed on injured reserve Monday, though it's unclear how long he'll be out. He's registered 12 goals and 13 assists in 50 appearances this campaign.
