Pittsburgh Penguins forward Ben Kindel is conscious, alert, and in stable condition after experiencing a medical episode on a team flight shortly after takeoff, the club announced Tuesday.

Kindel, 19, was immediately attended to by the Penguins' team physician and medical staff. The team plane returned to the Salt Lake City International Airport, where an ambulance was waiting. Kindel was taken to the University of Utah Hospital for further evaluation.

The Penguins said they "will provide further updates when appropriate."

Kindel has two goals and four points in nine games this season. He had 17 goals and 35 points in 77 contests last year as a rookie.

Pittsburgh played in Utah on Monday, losing 5-4 to the Mammoth. The Penguins' next game is Thursday in Pittsburgh against the Florida Panthers.
