John Tavares gives signed jersey to young Islanders fan mocked in Winnipeg
Jake Lotocki, 11, attended a game between the New York Islanders and Winnipeg Jets at the MTS Centre on March 4, and, according to the Winnipeg Sun, was taunted by the home fans for wearing a John Tavares jersey.
One unruly fan even yelled "You suck! Go home, loser!” at the boy, and Lotocki had to leave the arena after the 3-2 Islanders' win with his jersey folded up so people wouldn't see it.
Upon hearing the story, Tavares - back on Long Island with a season-ending knee injury - contacted the Islanders' director of communications, Kimber Auerbach, and said he wanted to do something for Lotocki.
Tavares suggested sending the boy a new jersey, autographed by No. 91 himself.
The Islanders have also promised to invite Lotocki to their game-day skate when they visit Winnipeg next season. “He’ll get to come down and meet John and some of the other players as well,” Auerbach said.
Lotocki's mother was "blown away" by the news, and Tavares has managed to turn an ugly story into an experience that this young fan will surely never forget.
