American Ryan Murphy doubled his gold medal collection Thursday, winning the 200m backstroke to go with the 100m backstroke gold he won earlier in Rio.
The 200m backstroke has truly been a U.S. dominated event, with an American man winning gold each of the last six Olympics. The last time a non-American took the gold in the Olympics was Martin Lopez-Zubero of Spain in 1992.
While he didn't set an Olympic record like he did in winning the 100m backstroke, Murphy was comfortably ahead at the finish, winning in a time of 1:52.62, 0.34 seconds ahead of Mitchell Larkin of New Zealand. Russia's Evgeny Rylov claimed the bronze while American Jacob Pebley took fifth.
