The show of sportsmanship between USA's Abbey D'Agostino and New Zealand's Nikki Hamblin in the women's 5000m Tuesday reminded everyone what the Olympics are all about.
After Hamblin tripped and took the American down with her, D'Agostino would stop and help her counterpart back to her feet, encouraging her to continue the race.
Unfortunately for D'Agostino, that act would lead to the end of her participation at Rio 2016, as the American suffered a torn ACL and meniscus, as well as a strained MCL in the fall with Hamblin. She would finish the final four laps of the race with the knee injuries, but is unable to continue.
The 24-year-old will miss the event final, but despite that setback, she is remaining positive about the Olympic experience and all the games can symbolize.
"By far the best part of my experience of the Olympics has been the community it creates, what the games symbolizes," D'Agostino said in a statement. "Since the night of the opening ceremonies, I have been so touched by this - people from all corners of the globe, embracing their unique cultures, yet all uniting under one celebration of the human body, mind, and spirit."
