Liendo wins silver, Kharun bronze in 100m butterfly

Canadian swimmers Josh Liendo and Ilya Kharun won silver and bronze, respectively, in the men's 100m butterfly. Hungary's Kristof Milak took the gold.

The two podium finishes are Canada's first medals in men's 100m butterfly since Bruce Robertson won silver at the 1972 Munich Games. Liendo and Kharun also secured the country's first double podium in men's swimming history and first since Cheryl Gibson and Becky Smith in the 400m individual medley at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

This is Liendo's first Olympic medal in his second Games and was just out-touched by Milak at the wall to settle for silver. Kharun was seventh at the halfway mark but stormed back and out-touch Switzerland's Noe Ponti at the wall by one-tenth. It's Kharun's second medal of the Games after winning bronze in the 200m butterfly.

Canada's eight medals in the pool are more than the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Games, where Canadians took home six medals in each. Kharun will swim in the men's 4x100m medley on Sunday.
