McIntosh misses Canadian-record medal haul with relay loss

Summer McIntosh fell short of a Canadian Summer Olympic record medal haul as the women's 4x100m medley relay team finished fourth.

The relay team, consisting of McIntosh, Maggie Mac Neil, Kylie Masse, and Sophie Angus, came up just short of a medal Sunday after racing in contention with the Australians and the Chinese for silver. McIntosh, who was anchoring the final leg, was unable to catch the two countries and had to settle for fourth. The American squad won gold, finishing almost four seconds ahead of the second-placed Australians and setting a world-record time.

McIntosh is tied with fellow swimmer Penny Oleksiak for the most medals won by a Canadian at a single Summer Olympics with four after Oleksiak first set the record at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. McIntosh finishes her Olympic Games with three gold medals and one silver medal. The 17-year-old phenom is the first Canadian to ever earn three golds at a single Games.

Canada's eight medals in the pool tie the 1976 Montreal Olympics for the most ever by the Canadian squad at a non-boycotted Olympics.
