Tale of the tape: Jordan Spieth vs. Rory McIlroy
While Michael Buffer won't be making an appearance at Augusta on Saturday, there's still a heavyweight fight for the ages on the schedule.
Jordan Spieth versus Rory McIlroy. The world No. 2 against the world No. 3. Under Armour versus Nike. The defending champion against the man chasing the career Grand Slam.
For those craving storylines, Saturday's final pairing is as good as it gets.
With the two combatants set to tee off at 2:50 p.m ET, let's look at the tale of the tape.
Jordan Spieth

Age: 22
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185 lbs.
College: Texas
Hometown: Dallas, Texas
Professional Wins: 9
Major Wins: 2
Best Masters Finish: Winner (2015)
STRENGTHS
- Arguably the most well-rounded player on tour.
- Has an absurd success rate at Augusta having led six straight rounds.
- Exceptional around the greens, and sinking clutch putts.
WEAKNESSES
- Seemed frustrated throughout round two after being put on the clock for slow play.
- Openly admitted prior to Saturday's round, ''I'd rather be playing with someone less threatening, to be honest."
Rory McIlroy

Age: 26
Height: 5-9
Weight: 165 lbs.
College: None
Hometown: Holywood, Northern Ireland
Professional Wins: 19
Major Wins: 4
Best Masters Finish: 4th (2015)
STRENGTHS
- Arguably has the most talent on the PGA Tour and is widely considered to be the top ball striker in the world.
- Absolutely overpowers a golf course, averaging a ridiculous 309 yards off the tee.
- Both par-5s on the back nine at Augusta essentially play as par-4s for McIlroy.
- Four-time major champion has faced the pressure cooker before.
WEAKNESSES
- Can be streaky with his putter, switched to the left-hand low grip just weeks prior to the Masters.
- Has struggled while in the lead at Augusta, ballooned to a final round 80 in 2012 after holding a four-stroke lead entering the day.
Verdict
Despite Spieth's dominance at Augusta, McIlroy certainly has to like his chances to rocket past the defending champion on moving day. The two have been paired for 12 rounds in their PGA tour career, and the Northern Irishman has dominated.
Player | Score to Par | Rounds in 60s | Better Round |
---|---|---|---|
Jordan Spieth | -4 | 2 | 4 |
Rory McIlroy | -27 | 5 | 6 |
With the remarkable consistency Spieth has shown at the Masters, don't expect a big number from the Texan. McIlroy will have to play his best to take over the top spot heading into Sunday, but he's shown he's more than capable of doing so against the defending champion.
Don't be shocked to see McIlroy post a low number and enter the final round with a chance to erase past demons at Augusta, and capture the career Grand Slam in the process.
