Mickelson, 'Bones' part ways after 25 years together

One of golf's most iconic partnerships is coming to an end as Phil Mickelson and longtime caddie Jim "Bones" Mackay have decided to part ways.

"After 25 very rewarding and memorable years, Bones and I have mutually decided to end our player-caddie relationship," Mickelson said in a statement obtained by Chris Solomon of No Laying Up. "Our decision is not based on a single incident. We just feel it's the right time for a change."

Mackay has been on Mickelson's bag since 1992, with the pair capturing five major championships and 41 PGA Tour wins in the process. The two grew very close off the golf course with both families spending a great deal of time together.

"After an amazing 25-year run, Phil and I have mutually decided to go our separate ways," Mackay said in his own statement obtained by Solomon. "Player-caddie relationships don't often last that long. I will always be grateful that I was around to witness so much of Phil's career."

The two men have formed the most famous partnership in golf in recent years, with much being made in the media of Mickelson allowing Mackay one "veto" per season. Mackay has often shared humorous stories of the instances in which he used this power and forced Mickelson to hit the shot he wanted.

Mickelson's brother Tim - who is currently the manager for star Spaniard Jon Rahm - will caddie for the 47-year-old for the remainder of the season.
