PGA picks: Scott's ball-striking to shine at FedEx St. Jude Classic

With just a week to go before the U.S. Open at Erin Hills, the PGA Tour descends on Memphis for the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

The TPC Southwind layout features just two par 5s, and requires pinpoint accuracy with the irons to find the small putting surfaces.

Daniel Berger is the defending champion, but he's not among the picks for this year's event.

Here's who you should put on the betting board for the final tuneup before the season's second major:

Favorite to watch (odds less than 25-1)

Adam Scott

Any tournament that places a premium on ball-striking is right up Adam Scott's alley, and the Australian should be in the mix this weekend. It's been 10 years since Scott last played the event, but he showed well with a seventh-place finish in that tournament. With two top-10 placings in his last four events, his game is in solid form, and he should thrive at hitting the tiny greens this week.

Top-5 odds: 11-4

2nd tier (odds greater than 25-1)

Kevin Chappell

When he's on his game, Kevin Chappell is one of the top iron players on the PGA Tour, and the 30-year-old has been in solid form over the past two months. A seventh-place showing at the Masters led to a win at the Valero Texas Open, and Chappell is primed for another good showing at a course that requires excellent iron play. At 30-1, the California native is definitely worth putting on your betting board this week.

Long shot (odds greater than 50-1)

Ian Poulter

After almost losing his PGA Tour card just over a month ago, Ian Poulter has regained his form heading into the Memphis. The Englishman has two top-11 showings in his last four events on the circuit, and has risen to eighth on Tour in strokes gained: approach-the-green. That statistic will play very well here, and if Poulter can have just an average week on the greens, he should be in contention on the weekend.

Super long shot (odds greater than 80-1)

Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson DeChambeau hasn't made a cut since April 1 and hasn't broken 70 on the PGA Tour since that time as well, but he's worth a couple bucks at 150-1 this week. The 23-year-old has battled putting issues all season, but remains a very talented ball-striker and looks to have turned things around in Monday's U.S. Open qualifier. DeChambeau fired rounds of 69 and 66 to grab one of the spots in the field at Erin Hills, and will look to head to the second major of the season on a high.

Top-5 odds: 22-1

Hit this bet, buy a car (odds greater than 175-1)

Roberto Castro

With nine missed cuts in his last 11 starts, it's been a very disappointing season for Roberto Castro. Despite that string of terrible results, it's still worth putting the 31-year-old on your betting card this week. Castro has a couple top-30 showings at the FedEx St. Jude in the past few years, and tends to play well as the temperature heats up throughout the summer. At 400-1, he's a solid play for a super long shot.
