Thomas' girlfriend almost missed his 1st career major win
One of the first people to congratulate Justin Thomas on his PGA Championship title Sunday was his girlfriend, Jillian Wisniewski, who waited greenside on the 18th as he sunk his final putt.
Television cameras caught the two exchanging a kiss as he walked to the scorer's tent, but Thomas later said she almost wasn't on hand for his first major championship win.
"My girlfriend was supposed to fly out at about 7, and I was like, 'You need to change your flight to later because I don't want you to miss this and I feel like I'm going to get it done,'" Thomas said while laughing in his press conference. "She's the first person to tell you that I don't want to talk about golf in that situation. I don't know, I was just very confident."
While Thomas was certainly playing at an elite level during his final round 68, he also got some help from the golfing gods on the par-5 10th hole.
After smashing his drive into a massive tree, Thomas received his first bit of good fortune when the ball bounded off a branch and into the fairway. After pitching to within 8 feet for birdie, the 24-year-old left his putt hanging on the edge of the hole for 12 seconds before it finally plunged in.
"This ball has to go in, there's no way it can stay there. I threw a little fit to see what would happen," Thomas said, recalling the incident. "Gravity took over and the roar was pretty loud so that was pretty cool."
That birdie helped fuel a ferocious back nine that left Thomas two shots clear of his closest competitors when all was said and done, and validated his idea that Jillian should change her flight plans.
